Alumni information

After completing your PhD at Maastricht University, you become part of a diverse alumni community spanning academia, industry, and beyond.

Staying connected with fellow graduates can provide valuable networking opportunities, professional support, and potential collaborations. The university offers various ways to keep in touch, including events, online platforms, and career development resources. Whether you continue in research or take a different path, you are always welcome to stay engaged with the university and its alumni network.

Other practical matters

When your PhD contract ends, there are some other practical matters to keep in mind.

  • Unemployment benefit (WW)
At the end of a temporary paid contract, you can apply for unemployment benefits. The duration and amount you will receive, depends on the length of your former contract.

  • Transition payment
Similarly, at the end of a temporary contract, you will receive a transition payment from Maastricht University. This payment also depends on the former contract and is intended to make the transition into a new position easier.

  • Residence permit
If your nationality requires a residence permit, the permit sponsored by Maastricht University will also end when your contract or guest agreement ends. As a PhD, you can usually apply for an orientation year residence permit. This permit allows you to live and search for work in the Netherlands for one year. Contact ISSO if you have questions.
