The thin line between security and freedom
Recent developments in the world of cybersecurity, espionage and surveillance have sparked increasing concern about fundamental freedoms. This has prompted BridgeEurope Maastricht to organise an event on the topic of ‘freedom’ and ‘security’.
The widespread collection of online data without much awareness among the general public of the consequences; the blanket surveillance measures taken by governments during the Covid-19 pandemic; and the increasing tensions between the balance of power states – these are just some examples of the necessity for this debate.
People now need to consider to what extent they are willing to give up their freedom to safeguard their own security, in order to tackle these issues as adequately possible.
Lecture & workshop
Firstly, participants will gain knowledge on the actual academic debate behind these topics through the expertise of Laura Dreschler. Secondly, participants will be split up into groups, to represent a specific country and negotiate their position in an EU proposal surrounding security policies.

BridgeEurope
BridgeEurope is a student-led non-governmental organisation active in several continents. It aims to build bridges between citizens who are geographically or ideologically divided. The organisation tackles this growing polarisation by creating a platform where students can discuss topical issues from different perspectives. This is mainly done through the organisation of online and offline events.
