International Conference ‘The Meuse: Past, Present and Future of the Limburg Riverscape’

This three-day Dutch-Belgian conference about the riverscape of the Meuse in Limburg focuses on changing relationships between man and the river from prehistory to today. It is organised around a series of short presentations by specialists, field excursions and networking opportunities.

The conference brings together a large group of researchers, policy makers, conservationists, (heritage) professionals and interested riverine dwellers and communities. Building on knowledge and practices from the past it aims at bringing about a fundamentally new understanding of the dynamics between man and their environment. 

The conference targets a large audience of people involved in collecting and applying new knowledge and insights about the Meuse, within academia but also in local/regional governments and NGOs. It wants to mobilise ‘citizen scientists’ to engage with the river’s past, and to co-create new ways of living WITH the river. 

The event is organised by a committee consisting of representatives from Maastricht University (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and MACCH), Koninklijk Limburgs Geschied- en Oudheidkundig Genootschap, Rivierpark Maasvallei, Sociaal Historisch Centrum voor Limburg, and Stichting Archeologie Actueel Limburg.
