Faculty of Law celebrates 45th anniversary
In 2026, the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University will celebrate its 45th anniversary. What began with just a hundred local students has grown into one of the most international law faculties in Europe. The anniversary year will focus on reflecting on 45 years of education, research, and societal engagement, while also looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the future.
What are we celebrating?
Since the arrival of the first staff members in 1981, the faculty has developed into an innovative, internationally oriented institution. It is characterised by its small scale, commitment, and personal atmosphere – qualities that continue to form the foundation of our community. Today, the faculty counts over 3,400 students and 420 staff members, all working together in education, research, and societal engagement.
Anniversary activities
The 45th anniversary will be celebrated with and for the faculty community – our students, staff, and alumni. We will integrate the celebrations into existing annual events, which this year will be themed around our anniversary. In addition, a number of special activities will be organised to mark this milestone together. The programme will offer opportunities for networking, inspiration, and collaboration, and will be driven by the energy and creativity of our students and staff.
A special year for Maastricht University
In the same year, Maastricht University itself will celebrate its 50th anniversary, highlighting the joint growth and development of both the university and the faculty – from pioneering years to a leading international university.
It promises to be a festive year, in which we will reflect on our past, celebrate the present, and look forward with confidence to the future of legal education in Maastricht.
