In memory of Mateusz Schmidt
Dear students and colleagues,
It is with great sadness that we mourn the totally unexpected death of Mateusz Schmidt (†3 January 2017), third year European Law School Student. Mateusz was born in Kraków and grew up there. Following his International Baccalaureate diploma, he came to Maastricht in 2014 with ambition and big dreams.
He was an excellent student and an active part of the European Law School community, where he enjoyed meeting fellow students from all over the world. In the last months, he had been an exchange student at Xiamen University in China and was planning to attend the university Marseille in France as a second semester abroad to complete his ELS studies. During his time in Maastricht he spent a lot of time at the university library, where he not only studied but also enjoyed time with his friends. He was considering enrolling in the International and European Tax Law master programme after his graduation.
We remember him as a hard working, very intelligent and friendly student, devoting time to his family and friends. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, loved ones and friends.
On Thursday 12th and Friday 13th January, room B.1.019 in our Faculty Building will be devoted to this loss and to those who wish to pay their respects and sign the condolence register or write a message in the register to Mateusz’s parents and family members. In the course of February, a remembrance ceremony will be held at the Faculty of Law in honour of Mateusz during which there will also be an opportunity to write a message in the condolence register.
It may be that you need spiritual assistance and guidance as a result of the passing of Mateusz Schmidt.
