The influence of positive emotions or cognitions on pro-environmental behavior: A systematic review
Hilde's elevator pitch
This thesis examines how positive emotions and cognitions, such as hope, gratitude, and (self)compassion, can inspire people to act more sustainably. While much research has focused on fear or anxiety as motivators, this Systematic Literature Review synthesizes evidence from seventeen studies exploring the brighter side of environmental engagement. The results show that positive psychological states are generally linked to stronger pro-environmental behavior, though experimental findings remain mixed. By shifting attention toward empowering emotions rather than fear-based appeals, this research highlights promising new directions for motivating meaningful and lasting climate action.
