The IGIR/IPKM expert lecture series addresses topics in the field of Innovation, Trade, Investment and Competition Law that are relevant to for today’s society. We invite speakers from academia and private practice to share insights on recent developments and to stimulate a debate with staff and students, in an informal setting.

Lecture title: “IP and tech law in practice - a view from inside a global engineering company.”
Abstract
Philipp Usadel, Senior Legal Counsel at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, will be speaking about his professional experiences as a German lawyer and Inhouse Counsel for a German Publishing House and an International Technology / Engineering Company. As Philipp mainly works in the area of intellectual property and Information technology, he will share his thoughts on some of the challenges he faces in his daily work—ranging from the difficulties of protecting intangible know-how, to issues regarding reproductions of copyrighted works in AI systems, to the protection of trade secrets and the EU Data Act.
Short bio
Dr Philipp Usadel currently works as Senior Legal Counsel at Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, a global manufacturer of propulsion and energy solutions for large-scale applications in mobility and infrastructure, such as shipping and rail transport, as well as power supply for hospitals, data centres and airports. Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, based in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, is a division of the English Rolls-Royce Group. Philipp Usadel's main focus is on intellectual property law, particularly in the areas of copyright, trademark law and competition law.
He is also responsible for research and development contracts and providing legal support for IT and procurement projects. Further he provides in-depth advice on (European) digital laws, particularly the EU AI Act and the EU Data Act. Before joining Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, Philipp Usadel worked as legal counsel for Ravensburger AG, an international games and books publisher based in Ravensburg. Here, his work focused on copyright, publishing and media law. Before changing to corporate, Philipp Usadel worked as an independent lawyer for intellectual and industrial property rights and copyright law in Aachen.
During this time, he completed his PhD at Maastricht University under the supervision of Hildegard Schneider and Anselm Kamperman-Sanders with a comparative law thesis on copyright law and access to education in the digital age. In addition to his PhD, Philipp Usadel holds a Master's degree (LL.M.) from Cologne University of Applied Sciences in media law and media economics. Philipp Usadel completed his legal training after studying in Passau, Lisbon and Freiburg and completing his legal clerkship with the second state examination in Karlsruhe.
