ETHICOMP 2027: Tech Shaping Lives
Maastricht University is proud to host ETHICOMP 2027, the 23rd edition of the international ETHICOMP conference series. Taking place from 2–4 June 2027, the conference will bring together researchers, professionals, and experts from around the world to explore the ethical, social, political, and philosophical questions surrounding the development and use of technology.
The theme of ETHICOMP 2027 is ‘Tech Shaping Lives’. The conference will focus on the ways in which technologies shape human experiences, societies, and everyday life. It will provide an inclusive international forum for discussing the human(e) factor in technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Extended Reality (XR), and Virtual Reality (VR).

Prof. Kiyoshi Murata and Dr. Ryoko Asai are confirmed speakers for our keynote panel on 'global philosophy of technology'; more panel members will be announced later.

About ETHICOMP
The ETHICOMP conference series was launched in 1995 by the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR) at De Montfort University, UK, by Professor Terry Bynum and Professor Simon Rogerson. Since then, ETHICOMP has developed into an international platform for interdisciplinary discussions on the ethical and social implications of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Conferences are organised approximately every 18 months and have welcomed delegates and speakers from across the globe. The most recent edition took place at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa in September 2025.
Organisation
ETHICOMP 2027 is organised by the Philosophy Department at Maastricht University, with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) serving as the main conference venue.
The conference directors are:
- Dr. Katleen Gabriels, Associate Professor of Philosophy
- Dr. Dani Shanley, Assistant Professor of Philosophy
The organising team is supported by colleagues from FASoS and works in close collaboration with the Maastricht Convention Bureau. This conference is made possible by a €2500 SWOL grant.
In addition to the programme at FASoS, one keynote session will take place at Brightlands Heerlen (on 3 June).
