We have a solid track record in the automation of manual sample preparation for various applications such as mass spectrometry, cryo-electron microscopy, cell culture, bioprinting. In close collaboration with researchers, Research Engineering designs and manufactures devices from basic concept (technology readiness level 2-3), and can assist in further development with increasing levels of technology readiness (level 7-8) until market entrance is achieved. Especially, engineering lab prototypes in robust functioning prototypes and the scale up from robust prototype to small series fabrication under regulatory conditions is our expertise with a regional network of local partners.

Wearable Health Care focusses on patient monitoring and coaching at home. Research Engineering together with MEMIC developed a modular Wearable Health Care platform including sensor data acquisition, data interpretation algorithms, electronic questionnaires, data management and feedback tools. The platform is used for the fast development of new monitoring and coaching prototypes together with clinicians and researchers within the MUMC+ to enlarge their medical scientific knowledge and together with companies make that available for validated care applications inside and outside the MUMC+. Indirect calorimetry equipment is an invaluable, powerful tool in metabolic research studies, allowing research in many fields, from fundamental research, nutrition assessment up to sport sciences. Researchers need reliable, validated results and a system that allows them to easily conduct various studies. Our technical expertise of indirect calorimetry is most evident in room calorimeters and in exercise testing equipment. Together with NUTRIM, new challenges are being addressed e.g. in the ITEA Foodfriend project. M4I Mass spectrometry requested the design and fabrication of a robust prototype to sublimate matrix on to biologic tissue samples (TRL 6). This work involved 3D CAD design, fabrication, technical testing, IP documentation, technology transfer to company HTX.

MUMC+ requested the design of an incubator stretcher for transporting neonates. This work involved 3D CAD design, fabrication, technical testing, TP and CE documentation achieving a TRL 7 level. Other hospitals have also purchased a system (e.g. LUMC). 

Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, MUMC+ requested the design and fabrication of a patient specific skull implant, which has been placed in the patient. This work involved 3D CT data segmentation, 3D CAD design, fabrication and documentation according to ISO14358.

Brightlands spin-off company Yourrhythmics requested assistance in redesign of their high resolution ECG recorder prototype for manufacturing and scale up at TRL 9. 

For the Centre for Human Drug Research CHDR, a carbon dioxide tolerance tester was developed that delivers a controlled gas mixture through a protected inhalation system and is used to measure anxiolytic/panicolytic effects of new test compounds.

Over the years, a stable data acquisition system was developed for accelerometry as well as for swift coupling with other sensors. This work involved electronic design, embedded software development, extensive testing and validation. TRL9.

Maastricht Instruments is a product incubator at the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus. We offer research prototypes developed at Maastricht UMC+ to worldwide R&D institutes.

Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, MUMC+ requested (1) finite element model analysis of a new mandibula implant; and (2) the design and build of a biomechanical test set-up to evaluate the implant. This work involved 3D CAD design, simulation, molds for precise cutting, adapters for testing, test plan and cowriting of the journal paper.

Cardiothoracal Surgery, MUMC+ requested the build of a RF line ablation surgical instrument. Iterative design and testing cycles on porcine heart samples led to a working prototype demonstrating the feasibility. This work involved eletronic modification of an existing RF device, design of flexible tissue beaks connected by magnets.

M4I Nanoscopy and Cryosol World BV requested the design and build of an experimental set-up to perform jet vitrification of various samples. We performed the entire design, fabrication and assistance in technical testing. This work involved system’s architecture, parts selection, motor controller, sequencing of steps, climate chamber, sample transportation.

The MUMC+ Intensive Care Unit requested the design and fabrication of an anatomic bench lung model for training bronchoscopic skills. This work involved 3D segmentation of CT dataset, 3D print, design and fabrication of connectors and inserts.

The School of Business and economics requested a smart toy to study cognitive skills in children. This work involved lasercutting a wooden maze, selecting and integrating sensor technology and software.

Imedtechnology BV and General Surgery, MUMC+ requested the design and build of a custom LED ring for implementation in their demonstrator prototype for spectral imaging of tissues. This work involved electronic parts selection, calculation and assembly.

Fysiology, FHML requested the design and fabrication of a prototype of a spoon shaped electrode. This work involved electronic design, soldering and assembly, machining of base plate, technical testing.

M4I Mass spectrometry requested the design and fabrication of an experimental set-up for performing continous mass spectrometry scanning of a 3D object. This work involved frame- and holder design, selection of sensor and motors, development of the user interface, programming of scanning and mass spectometry sequence.

The department of Ophtalmology reqested the design and fabrication of an optic lense to study the porcine eye. This work involved 3D milling of acrylate.

MERLN institute requested the fabrication of a physical logo of the LINK programme. This work involved customized letter laser cutting from acrylaat and integration of blue LED strips.

M4I Nanoscopy in collaboration with HennyZ requested the fabrication of extremely small parts. In yellow you see the head of push pin. Using his magic hands, this part was machined by Paul Verjans.

MERLN requested the repair of of the rotary part of a particle grinder. Two broken blades were replaced by custom made new ones.

The Faculty of Science requested a safe solution to heat up test tubes. An aluminium holder with good heat conductivity was designed and fabricated. This work involved turning and milling.

M4I Mass spectrometry requested the fabrication of an externally triggered device that creates a 100μs pulse at 5V DC. This work involved electronic design and assembly.

The Anatomy department requested the fabrication of a display for brainslices which can be stacked on top of each other for educative purposes.

General welding jobs. For example: repair of animal cages and mounting a 360° camera platform to a harnas.
