We are deeply saddened by the death of Emile Goblet on the 24th of February 2021, at the age of 24.

After a Bachelor in International Studies at Leiden University, Emile came to study Globalisation and Development Studies (GDS) at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences from 2019 onwards.

The staff and students of GDS are shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. We came to know Emile as a sharp thinker, willing to debate ideas and push the discussion forward. Some got to know him as a passionate cook. Many got to share in his laughter.

His devotion and drive expressed in class only showed a fraction of what he wanted to achieve in life. He was as an extremely caring person. He had clearly defined plans to share his care with the world. He was a student passionate about development issues, especially grassroots community engagement, which shows in his studies but also work he did in Udaipur, India. He was also a true citizen of the world, having lived, studied and worked in various countries. The multiple languages he could speak (six!), also depict his engagement with the world.

Before going to university, Emile worked with a Shakespearian theatre company. Hence, we end this memoriam with a quote by Shakespeare:

For you, in my respect, are all the world.
Then how can it be said I am alone
When all the world is here to look on me?

The funeral took place on Saturday in an intimate circle. Via the memori website it is possible to extend your condolences online.

International Women's Day

Today is International Women’s Day! SBE alumnus Ruud Dautzenberg is organising a special event - a sports challenge - in order to support women in Papua New Guinea (PNG) who experience period poverty. Here is a short interview about his time in Maastricht and this amazing initiative.

We are always happy to make an appointment with you to discuss how we can support your project.

You can directly e-mail us at one of the e-mail addresses below.
