Maastricht University student team wins ISM Global Case Competition

Over the past two months, two student teams from Maastricht University participated in the finals of the ISM Global Case Competition. ISM is the first and largest professional association for purchasing and supply management worldwide, based in the USA.

In total 8 teams were competing with each other in the final round. Maastricht University's two teams (MSc SCM Maastricht & MSc GSCMC Venlo) were mainly up against teams from the USA: Drexel University (USA), University of Tennessee (USA), Bowling Green University (USA), University of Texas (USA), Michigan State University (USA). Among the competition was also ESCA from Marocco. The case study addressed an industry challenge in procurement and supply management that the students needed to solve.

During a final zoom award session, which was attended by around 115 people, the jury announced the winning team. The final scores were based on both the scores from the jury comprised of supply management experts and by live voting from ISM 2021 World conference attendees.

We are happy to report that the winning team was Maastricht University's team MSc GSCMC Venlo! The Venlo team consisted of MSc students Kamilla Barat, Janis Fristfelds, Soyeon Kim and Goele Smeets, with Professor Bart Vos as their coach.

The other participating Maastricht University team consisted of the following International Business students in the supply chain management track: Paula Sakowsky, Carina Saure and Megi Gega. Their coach was Professor Frank Rozemeijer.

In addition to the first prize of five thousand US dollars, the team received a one-to-one coaching session with a supply management executive, as well as complimentary access to ISM's Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM)® digital learning system.

Michigan State University placed 2nd and Texas University placed 3rd in the competition.

Let's hear from some of the case competition participants!

"Despite COVID-19 restrictions and the online environment, ISM global student case competition has been an Invaluable experience to us all. Managing the timely completion of the case and standing out among the competition would have been impossible without our team's individual strengths, diversity, experience and the support received from our coach and subject matter experts." - Janis Frišfelds, SBE student and member of SBE's team 'Master GSCMC in Venlo'

It was really an honor and privilege to coach my team (Kamilla, Soyeon, Goele and Janis) during this ISM competition over the past few months. I really saw their solution shaping and maturing during this journey, both in terms of content and presentation. Hence they fully deserve the Dream Team label as winners of this prestigious competition!” - Bart Vos, coach for the SBE team 'Master GSCMC in Venlo'

"It was great to see the energy and enthusiasm in my student team to compete in this global case competition. They were eager to win! I was impressed by how quickly they understood the underlying issues at hand in the complex case, and by how they were able to come up with creative and relevant ideas on how to solve the case.

They did not win in the end, but I am very proud with the end result. It shows that they have learned a lot from the MSc Supply Chain Management track in Maastricht.” - Frank Rozemeijer, coach for the SBE team 'MSc SCM Maastricht'
