From genetic discovery to patient impact

Bert Smeets was recently featured in NRC in an article highlighting the long and often complex journey from scientific discovery to a treatment that can truly benefit patients. His research on rare inherited muscle disorders has led to a promising regenerative therapy using patients’ own healthy muscle stem cells. The article also shows that scientific progress alone is not enough: clinical research, entrepreneurship, manufacturing, investment and close collaboration with patients all need to come together. For Bert, patient conversations have provided an important perspective: “Sometimes small steps can already make a world of difference for patients.” Even modest improvements in mobility or independence can have a major impact on daily life. The work is now being advanced through Milocron Therapeutics and the wider Brightlands ecosystem, with the ambition of making innovative therapies both accessible and affordable.
