THE Maastricht guide for new students: mymaastricht.nl

mymaastricht.nl is the guide for every international student new to Maastricht and Dutch life.

This website offers detailed information about housing, health, transport and finances in Maastricht. Here to help you make Maastricht yours!

What to do next?
Need-to-knows to get you started:

  • It is important that you know that the housing market in Maastricht is very busy, especially in December and January. Therefore, start looking for accommodation early.

Do you have questions about the Dutch housing market and finding accommodation? Find the answers in the housing section.

  • If you are an international student who is staying in the Netherlands for longer than four months, it is a legal requirement to register with the municipality as a resident of the city. This will let you get your BSN (Burgerservicenummer, citizen service number), which will be essential for you to deal with any Dutch administrative processes that will come up.

Note: you are required to register for your BSN within five days of arriving in the Netherlands!

  • It’s a really good idea to register with a general practitioner (GP) in your neighbourhood as soon as possible. They are the first point of contact when it comes to receiving any non-emergency healthcare in the Netherlands.

  • Find out if you need Dutch health insurance. Check out the health section so that you arrive well-prepared.

  • Wondering how to open a Dutch bank account? Or anything else about finances for your time in Maastricht? Then, mymaastricht will come to your aid.

  • Something that is also good to know is how the Maastricht’s waste disposal system works. We recommend that you get familiar with it to avoid receiving a fine for separating your garbage incorrectly. (This can be up to €150!)
