This project explores the synthesis of fully aromatic building blocks—specifically diacids and diamines—from lignin. These novel bio-based monomers will be used to create polyaramids and evaluated for their processability and performance compared to conventional fossil-based materials.
Aromatic polycondensates, such as polyaramids, are indispensable materials in sectors like automotive, electronics, and high-performance textiles, thanks to their exceptional thermal and mechanical properties. However, these polymers are currently made from fossil-derived building blocks, contributing to carbon emissions and resource depletion. To address this, researchers are seeking renewable alternatives—particularly from lignin, a complex, plant-based source rich in aromatic compounds.
