Interview with Marcelina Palamar, Student ambassador European Studies on Society, Science and Technology 2024-2025
Why did you choose to study European Studies on Society, Science and Technology in Maastricht?
“I chose Maastricht because it was recommended to me. The university has a strong reputation, and its Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach appealed to me, especially since many graduates move to Brussels. At Cambridge, I initially studied French and Russian for three years before switching to business management in my final year. This shift helped me explore topics for my master's, like business innovation and the societal impact of technology.”
What do you enjoy most about your studies?
“I love the varied and interdisciplinary modules. Each one brings fresh information that excites me. I also enjoy group work. It’s not just about solitary study. Working in diverse teams enriches our discussions. Through this programme, I hope to deepen my understanding of how technology and society interact, especially regarding social equity, which I plan to explore in my thesis.”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“I’d love to work in a policy or government role where I can see the real-world effects of my work. Whether it’s in a think tank or something similar. I want to contribute to positive societal change. For now, I’m keeping my options open and will use the career services at UM to help with my next steps”
How do you like living in Maastricht?
“I really like living in Maastricht. It feels like the university town I was in before, with its cobbled streets and bike-riding culture. The city is cosy and charming, especially the river at night when all the lights create a romantic atmosphere. I appreciate how international it is, and everyone has been very welcoming. It’s been a lovely place to settle into.”
