Fabio Simonetti (F.)

Research profile

Fabio's most recent research explored marginalised aspects of the Second World War Allied occupation of Italy through encounters between British soldiers and Italian civilians. The project received the 2022 Society for Italian Studies Postgraduate Prize and forms the basis of his first monograph in English, Encounters in Wartime Italy: A Social History of Invasion, Liberation, and Occupation (Oxford University Press, 2025).

Fabio also co-edited a special issue of Modern Italy (Cambridge University Press, 2026) on 'The Allied Occupation of Italy in History and Culture' with Dr Camilo Erlichman, and published academic articles and book chapters, including on Modern Italy and Italian Culture.

Before that, Fabio explored the German occupation of Italy by publishing his first monograph, Via Tasso. Quartier generale e carcere tedesco durante l’occupazione di Roma (Odradek, 2016).
