The valedictory lecture “Misery is not a Matter of Math; Once again ‘Intersectionality’” is a critical homage to intersectionality theory, which has shaped gender studies since the 1990s. This public lecture expounds the academic and societal relevance of this paradigm, and the way in which it supports empirical research, It also criticizes reductionist popularizations, which have been conducive to ‘oppression olympics’. Rivalry over victimhood tends to generate animosity between divers vulnerable societal groups, which is highly undesirable, given the current political climate in Europe and North-America.
