"Cost calculation of circular plastics"
This thesis investigates what it costs companies in Europe to turn household plastic packaging waste into materials for new products. It connects the different recycling steps with their associated costs and examines how waste quality, processing methods and the amount of material lost during recycling affect the cost of the recycled plastic produced.
The findings show that packaging design and sorting decisions can create additional costs for recyclers over which they have little control. The research also develops a method to make uncertainty in cost estimates visible, for example when energy or material prices fluctuate, and identify its main causes.
These insights can help companies understand their costs, compare recycling options and make better informed purchasing and investment decisions. They also provide a basis for policies that better reflect the costs borne by recycling companies. Ultimately, keeping plastics in use requires recycling companies that can cover their costs and stay in business.
