Dr Claudia van Oppen (D.r.)

Dr. Claudia van Oppen is currently Deputy Director of Maastricht University Library and Manager of the Department Research Support and Development. 

As Deputy Director of Maastricht University Library and Manager of the Department of Research Support and Development one of her main responsibilities is the further development and integration of the Research Data Services to the benefit of the UM and MUMC+ research community and the strategic goal of the UM regarding Open Science and FAIR data use by 2023.

She obtained her Master Degree in Business Economics, Organization Science and Marketing at Maastricht University (2000). Her master thesis ‘The Loyalty Monitor’ was nominated for the DMSA Carel Rog award 2000.

She started her career as a junior lecturer and research fellow at the Department of Marketing at Maastricht University. In 2007 she finished her PhD research ‘From Rags to Richness: A structuration Perspective on Interactional Richness and its Impact on Customer Evaluations of Online Experiences’. Her PhD thesis was nominated for the Marketing Science Prize 2008, an initiative of Accenture, Aprimo and PIM (Platform Innovative Marketing). Her work has been published in Management Information Science Quarterly, Journal of Relationship Marketing, in the book Principes van Marketing by Philip Kotler and in commercial publications such as Tijdschrift voor Marketing and Adfodirect.

Claudia was founder and Manager of the SME Portal Maastricht University, responsible for facilitating, coordinating and managing the knowledge transfer between Maastricht University and entrepreneurs in the (EU) region between 2007 and 2011. In 2011 she was Interim Managing Director of METEOR research school at Maastricht University. As Manager of the Business Development and Knowledge Transfer cluster of the School of Business and Economics (SBE) at Maastricht University (2012-2015), she supported and facilitated the development and implementation of various educational and research activities focusing on business development & knowledge transfer. Her main focus was on the development of the Business Intelligence and Smart Services Institute and the Smart Services Campus. She was a co-author of the Masterplan Smart Services Hub and a member of both the BISS kwartiermakers team and the Founding Father Smart Services Campus team. From October 2015 till March 2017 she was Manager of Interaction & Business Relations at the Business Intelligence & Smart Services Insitute (BISS) at the Smart Services Campus in Heerlen.

From January 2017 till October 2020 she has been the Manager of the Institute of Data Science @UM. Together with distinguished professor Michel Dumontier she played an important and valuable role in the development of this new Research Institute at UM and has developed and implemented diverse interfaculty research and education activities.
