Four new programmes launch at the Faculty of Science and Engineering
In September, the first students will begin in four new programmes at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. A milestone we’re celebrating not just in Maastricht and Venlo, but for the first time also in Heerlen. This development underscores our ambition to anchor young talent in science and technology to the region.
Heerlen: a knowledge city on the rise
Heerlen will host the new Bachelor’s in Urban Sustainability Studies, a unique programme teaching students to build the sustainable cities and regions of the future. The programme is part of the European YUFE network (Young Universities for the Future of Europe), of which Maastricht University is a member. Students will study at three of the eleven participating universities and cities, including Maastricht University in Heerlen. A first that further establishes the city as an academic hub and a catalyst for innovation and prosperity in Parkstad.
Venlo: food, sustainability, and life sciences
In Venlo, we’re welcoming students to two new programmes: the bachelor’s in Sustainable Bioscience and the master’s in Crop Biotechnology and Engineering. Both align perfectly with the region’s ambitions as a leader in healthy and sustainable food innovation. To this, FSE adds a crucial technical dimension.
In addition to laying a solid foundation in biology, technology, earth sciences and societal perspectives, Sustainable Bioscience tackles today’s major challenges, from the loss of biodiversity to the impact of climate change on food security and health. Students learn how natural systems work, equipping them to build a better future for people and the planet.
Crop Biotechnology and Engineering, a collaboration with Radboud University Nijmegen, delves into the crops and cultivation techniques of the future, where robotics and AI are essential tools for growers, farmers, and researchers.
Maastricht: ethical and sustainable AI development
Maastricht will also see the start of a new master’s in Responsible Data Science. This unique programme focuses on the fair, transparent, and secure use of modern computing technologies like artificial intelligence. With themes such as machine learning, generative AI, blockchain, and FAIR data use, we’re preparing students for a future where technology, humanity, and the planet exist in harmony.
