UM receives additional funds to further improve education
From 1 January 2021, Maastricht University will receive additional funding from the Dutch Government for another four years to continue the development of education. The Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO) have allocated the funds after positively assessing the "quality agreements" UM had drawn up.
Funds for these quality agreements were made available when the loan system was abolished a few years ago. It was then agreed that savings should go towards improving education. However, universities are only awarded the extra resources if they formulate concrete plans (approved by the stakeholder representatives) around six predefined themes, such as small-scale intensive education, better supervision of students and professional training for teachers.
UM’s plans include:
- intensifying education
- promoting student well-being and resilience
- reviewing the system for academic assessment
- Global Citizenship Education for students: knowledge and skills for an increasingly global world with corresponding societal challenges
- expanding student-related educational facilities
- experimenting with longer opening times of buildings and libraries
- facilitating UM teachers to invest in their professional development as educators
