"Pectus Excavatum: Advancements in the management of a complex deformity"
A funnel chest (pectus excavatum) is the most common congenital chest wall deformity, characterized by an inward depression of the sternum. This condition can cause physical symptoms such as exercise intolerance or heart palpitations, but it can also affect a patient’s self-image. The dissertation presents several innovations that further improve the care for this condition. New techniques, such as the Crane system to temporarily elevate the sternum and cryoablation to reduce pain, make surgical treatment safer and recovery faster. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) imaging offers many advantages: it is radiation-free and allows for accurate assessment of the chest wall. This technique may also contribute to developing a clear definition of the funnel chest. Finally, global differences in treatment highlight the need for a guideline to ensure that every patient receives the same high standard of care.
