"Autologous Fat Transfer for Total Breast Reconstruction: From Trials to Triumphs"

This thesis investigated the effectiveness and safety of autologous fat transplantation (AFT). Several national studies demonstrated that AFT is an effective and safe method for breast reconstruction using the patient’s own fat tissue. Women reported a higher quality of life after surgery compared to before surgery. Furthermore, improvements in quality of life were comparable to those achieved with DIEP flap reconstruction, another technique using the patient’s own tissue. AFT was also not associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer or recurrence. This relatively new breast reconstruction technique can be implemented nationwide. To support plastic surgeons in adopting the technique, an e-learning programme was developed and positively received. Studies in this thesis also showed that breast skin expansion using a vacuum pump is ineffective in achieving greater breast volume. AFT can now be offered to patients nationwide.
