The UM community: diverse, equitable and inclusive
UM is a diverse community with members coming from all across Limburg, the Netherlands, Europe and other parts of the globe. Each brings their cultural backgrounds, languages, traditions, religions and viewpoints with them. Our community members are queer and straight, women, men and non-binary. Some of us have a disability, chronic illness or are neurodivergent. Others are studying parents or are taking care of their own parents.
No matter who you are or how many of these descriptions you identify with—you belong here! Welcome!
What does diversity, equity and inclusion have to do with you?
Every student at UM contributes to, and benefits from, a community where everyone is valued and supported. Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion means:
- you should feel safe and respected
- you have equal access to opportunities, support and facilities
- your voice matters and your experiences help shape our university
- you are part of a community where differences are embraced
Together, we make UM a place where everyone can thrive.
A diverse community like ours needs nurturing. All of us have something to contribute, to help ourselves grow and support the people around us. How? By connecting with others, by listening to understand, and by offering support whenever we can.
That’s where YOU come in! Connect and make new friends through one of the many student organisations, share your stories, have fun, learn from one another, and make your voice heard within the UM community.
Supportive networks at UM
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion+ Office facilitates the following networks:
- UM Pride: An LGBTQIA+ network for students and staff, focused on community, advocacy and awareness. Whether you’re out, exploring your identity, or looking for connection—this space is for you.
- UnliMited-Students: A student-led network for those with a disability, chronic illness, neurodivergence. A place where you can feel seen, heard and supported.
- African and Caribbean Maastricht University Society (ACMUS): A vibrant student-led community dedicated to celebrating the richness and diversity of African and Caribbean cultures within Maastricht University.
UM also has a wide range of student organisations focused on other interests, identities and causes.
Belonging starts with us all
Nurturing diversity is about understanding and dialogue, not about 'cancelling' or calling each other out. Pointing fingers and name-calling each don’t make UM safer. Inclusion grows when we question our own assumptions and biases (because we all have them), remain open to feedback and deeply listen to one another.
At the same time, we have to feel comfortable standing up for ourselves and for injustices we see happening to others. Speaking up, offering a listening ear or simply being there for one another helps create a supportive and equitable community.
Get started today!
Join one of the networks. Speak to a new fellow student and ask, “When do you really feel like you belong?” Or share something meaningful about yourself.
