Keynote speaker Robbert Dijkgraaf

In her first opening speech as UM President Rianne Letschert reflected in this year’s theme: ‘(Re)thinking borders: rails of creativity’. In her speech, she focused on internationalisation and spoke about looking to the future and pushing borders. You can see the full speech here and read the full text here

We were honoured to host Robbert Dijkgraaf during his very first Opening of an Academic Year as Minister of Education, Culture and Science. He spoke about our educational system, opportunities for development and took a glance into the future. In his speech, he addressed the entire education sector of the Netherlands. Watch his keynote speech entitled: 'As knowledge changes' here.

We have to start looking at education as a range instead of the tradition vertical view, breaking down unnecessary walls between and within institutions.

Young Universities for the Future of Europe

As a European educational partnership between several universities and three non/academic partners, Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) strives to break down borders in education. UM and YUFE student Eveline van Eerd shared her thoughts and YUFE student Nis Hansen moderated a panel discussion between Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf and Marieke van den Berg, HR director of YUFE partner Adecco. We also called YUFE student George Apeitos from the University of Cyprus.

This year, Assistant Professor Daniel Cámpora Pérez of the Faculty of Science and Engineering received the Edmond Hustinx Prize for his research at the intersection of physics and computer science. Cámpora developed the data filtering software for one of the experiments at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN.

The three founders of 'Shelter Our Students Maastricht' were handed the Student Award 2022 by Rector Magnificus Pamela Habibović. This award is presented annually to students who, in addition to their studies, make a special contribution to society or culture. The jury praised the co-founders of SOS Maastricht for their efforts to address the shortage of student accommodation in Maastricht, including setting up a couchsurfing platform.

Finally, Associate Professor of Educational Development & Research Ineke Wolfhagen received the UM Medallion of Honour for her great contribution to education at UM.
