Liliana Marques, Alumna MA Arts and Culture

Graduation year: 2025

What was it about this master's programme that made you think, ‘This is the one for me’?
When I was searching for a master’s programme, my focus was finding a programme centred on contemporary literature and culture. I have always been deeply interested in this field and was looking forward to gaining a more in-depth understanding of it. The MA Arts and Culture offered exactly that, while also putting an emphasis on social justice and cultural intervention, something that is not often found in other MA programmes.

Could you tell more about which specialisation you choose?
Within the Arts and Culture MA, I choose the CLA (Contemporary Literature and Arts) specialisation, as it was what drew me to this programme in the first place. With a focus on literature and art, alongside topics such as speculative fiction and artivism, we were given the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects through different theoretical lenses. As someone with a strong interest in literature and art, particularly contemporary literature and film, it was wonderful being able to explore and analyse various types of media.

Looking back, what are the things you learned during your studies that truly help you in your current career/experiences/personal life?
Something that I did not realise immediately, but after finishing my master’s programme working within strict guidelines and structures for each assignment significantly sharpened my writing skills and improved the way I approach research. In addition, joining a programme with a PBL system made me much more confident in participating, speaking up and sharing my thoughts and opinions, something that is helpful in every aspect of my life.

Could you tell us more about your current career?
I am currently working as a press officer, where I collaborate with universities, organisations and international institutions to help them reach their full potential regarding their external communication and media presence.

At the moment, my biggest goal is to maintain a good work-life balance and always make time for the small pleasures in life, such as going to the cinema, to a good restaurant, and spending time with my favourite people.

What is your fondest memory from your time here in Maastricht as a student at FASoS?
It is incredibly difficult having to choose just one fond memory from my time at FASoS, but the first one that comes to mind is being an ambassador, especially during in-person events, such as open days and campus tours. There is something truly special about sharing both the joys and the challenges that are part of this journey with future students and seeing the future generations of FASoS students excited to begin their studies and life at Maastricht.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your time in Maastricht?
Maastricht is a small but vibrant city, with so much to offer. While stepping outside of our comfort zone can be challenging, it is essential to grow and to make the most out of this experience. For me, this meant solo traveling, joining a book club and going to random workshops. For others, it may look completely different. Ultimately, it was this stepping out of my safe spaces and routines that made my time at FASoS and Maastricht so special and memorable.
