CLEER Summer School 2016

CLEER and the T.M.C. Asser Instituut present their third intensive one-week summer school in EU External Relations Law, hosted by Maastricht University in the European capital of Brussels, from 27 June - 1 July 2016.

The programme will comprise interactive lectures delivered by renowned academic experts, workshops led by experienced practitioners and excursions to the EU institutions, enabling participants to glean first-hand experience of how theory is transformed into practice.

What does the programme offer to you?
1. Extensive knowledge of the core actors and instruments forming the foundations of the EU's external action
2. Deep understanding of legal and policy issues in key fields including the ENP, Trade, Development, Environment, CFSP/CSDP, and AFSJ.
3. Simulating debate on current EU external policy challenges such as the EU refugee crisis and counter-terrorism efforts.
4. First-hand experience of life at the heart of the EU, along with fantastic networking opportunities.

Admission requirements
Students, civil servants or practitioners with an academic background or practical experience in law, political science or international relations.

Language
All lectures will be held in English.

Registration and information

Tuition fee

Students
 Applicants are encouraged to submit their application (i.e. CV & motivation letter) as soon as possible, but definitely by 6 May 2016 to Melissa Beltgens. You will receive a confirmation in due course.
 € 250 for 5 days (covering all lunches & opening dinner on Monday 27 June).
 It is not possible to participate for one day.
 Eight scholarships are available for students, waiving the tuition fee which will be awarded on the basis of merit and financial need.

Professionals
 € 500 for 5 days (covering all lunches & opening dinner on Monday 27 June)
 Daily attendance is also possible at € 100 per day (including lunch).

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance. For students, 2 ECTS will be awarded upon successful participation in the summer school exam.
Limited places are available. Please note that we can only admit a maximum number of 30 participants.

Travel information

Brussels Airport
Best take bus 12 or bus 21 that both cover the area between Brussels Airport and the city centre. In both cases get off at ‘Diamant’ and take line 23 (t) or 24 (t) both in the direction of ‘Vanderkindere’ or take line 25 (t) in the direction of Boondaal Station. Get off at ‘Montgomery’ and walk in the direction of the Arch on the left side of the Rue Tervuren. Enter the second street on your left. This is the Avenue de l’Armée/ Legerlaan and after 10 meters the UM Campus Brussels will be on your left side.

Car
When driving on the E40 from the direction of Maastricht - Liege please keep left when entering Brussels, follow the signs ‘Montgomery’ and drive through the tunnel. Keep following the signs saying ‘Montgomery’ and in a few minutes you will approach the Montgomery roundabout. At the roundabout go ‘in principle’ straight ahead and take the second exit. Take the first street to the right, go straight ahead and take the second street to the right. This is the Avenue de l’Armée/ Legerlaan, on the right side of this block you will find the UM Campus Brussels at number 10.

Train/metro
When arriving at Brussels’ Central station walk to the metro. Take the purple metroline 1 leading to Stockel and get off at ‘Montgomery’. Take exit ‘Boulevard de Saint-Michel / Rue Tervuren 1-171’ and take a right. Walk in the direction of the Arch and enter the second street on your left. This is the Avenue de l’Armée/ Legerlaan and after 10 meters the UM Campus Brussels will be on your left side.

Metro

Tram and bus
The following trams (t) and busses (b) depart or end at Montgomery: 22 (b): to Luxembourg, 39 (t): to Ban-Eik, 44 (t): to Tervuren Station, 61 (b): to North Stations, 81 (t): to Marius Renard. The following lines stop at Montgomery as well: 23 (t): Heizel-Vanderkindere, 24 (t): Schaarbeek Station – Vanderkindere, 25 (t): Rogier – Boondaal Station, 27 (t): Andromeda – South Station, 80 (b): Maes – Naamsepoort. From ‘Montgomery’ please walk in the direction of the Arch on the left side of the Rue Tervuren. Enter the second street on your left. This is the Avenue de l’Armée/ Legerlaan and after 10 meters the UM Campus Brussels will be on your left side.
