"In Search of Clarity. A Journey Through Preventive Healthcare and it’s Challenges

Dutch healthcare is under tremendous pressure. According to the Dutch Social and Economic Council (SER), if we do nothing, one in four working people will soon be needed in healthcare. In addition, healthcare costs are likely to double in the coming decades. This situation is simply unsustainable.

According to Onno van Schayck, the future of effective healthcare lies not solely in medical treatments, but in a fundamental shift towards a healthcare model in which prevention is structurally embedded. And that approach does not begin only in hospitals or at the general practitioner’s office, but also within the immediate living environment of people who are still healthy.

In my farewell lecture, I will present several examples of which forms of preventive healthcare are effective and which are not. I will also show various examples of proven effective preventive care that is nevertheless not being implemented, even though implementation seems obvious and the benefits are clear. How can lifestyle medicine become more integrated into curative healthcare?
