Problem-Based Learning
At Maastricht University (UM), we care not only about what you learn but also about how you learn. Here, you will be part of an interactive and meaningful learning experience known as Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Most of your education takes place in groups of 10 to 15 students.
Working in small groups makes it easy to connect with fellow students and enhance each other's learning process. Through teamwork, you actively engage with knowledge and exchange ideas. This collaborative environment allows you to view things from multiple perspectives, helping you gain a deeper understanding of the material and come up with creative, well-founded solutions. At the Faculty of Science and Engineering we also use two varieties of PBL:
- Project-Centred Learning – you study by doing projects in small groups.
- Research-Based Learning – you study, doing your own research in a small group.
Which varieties of PBL you use depends on the programme you choose.
Events
Throughout the academic year, several events are organised to guide you in your decision-making process. Attend an Experience Day at one of our campuses, visit the Bachelor's or Master's Open Day or join us online in a Q&A session
