G. Cifrodelli

Gabriele Cifrodelli is Assistant Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Maastricht University. He is a member of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation (IGIR) and part of the teaching staff of the Advanced Master in Intellectual Property Law and Knowledge Management (IPKM).

His research lies at the intersection of intellectual property, (open) innovation, and technological development, with a particular focus on the governance of emerging technologies, collaborative innovation ecosystems, and knowledge-sharing practices. His work combines doctrinal, empirical, and interdisciplinary approaches to examine how legal frameworks can foster innovation while balancing public and private interests.

Gabriele obtained his Law Degree from University of Trento and subsequently completed an LL.M. in Intellectual Property and the Digital Economy at the University of Glasgow. He earned his PhD from the University of Glasgow, where his doctoral research explored the testing and application of the Governing Knowledge Commons framework in the context of AI-powered drug discovery and development.

His current research interests encompass intellectual property law, open science, open-source initiatives, artificial intelligence, and innovation policy. In particular, he is interested in how legal and institutional arrangements can support collaborative forms of innovation in technologically complex environments.

In recognition of his research, he received one of the Best Doctoral Presentation Awards at the ATRIP Annual Congress 2024. His work has been presented at international conferences and contributes to ongoing debates on the governance of innovation, knowledge commons, and the role of intellectual property in emerging technological fields.
