Valedictory lecture Prof. dr. Frits van Merode
Professor of "Logistics and Operational Management of healthcare" in the Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences
"Time scarcity"
The field of Logistics and Operational Management in healthcare investigates how access times to outpatient clinics and waiting times within healthcare processes (such as waiting for examinations, admission, or surgery) arise. The aim is to design better healthcare organizations. Logistics focuses on the physical flow of patients, healthcare professionals, and resources: it ensures that the right people, materials, and information are in the right place at the right time. Operational management is concerned with planning, directing, and optimizing these processes so that everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Together, they ensure that both patients and healthcare professionals receive the best possible support. This lecture discusses opportunities for improving access and waiting times, both within and between healthcare organizations. The challenges involved are also addressed.
