Dr Lars Hausfeld (L.)
Research. I am a cognitive neuroscientist specializing in auditory neuroscience, focusing on how the brain processes complex sounds in realistic environments. My research examines the impact of sound reflections and challenging listening conditions with multiple sound sources. Using high-field MRI, EEG, and psychoacoustics, I study auditory attention, speech recognition in noise, and voice identity processing. Through advanced pattern analysis, I use the data to investigate how the brain decodes natural sounds like speech and music in various conditions, aiming to uncover the neural basis of auditory perception in real-world settings. I'm heading the research line "Cortical Correlates of Listening to Naturalistic Sound" in the Auditory Perception and Cognition group https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/fpn/ansm
Education. Alongside my research activities, I am strongly committed to education, mentorship, and academic training. I coordinate the Cognitive Neuroscience specializations of the one-year Master’s programme and the selective two-year Research Master’s programme. I also contribute to the new Bachelor’s programme in Brain Science as a member of its Educational Programme Committee, supporting the quality and continuous development of the programme. My educational responsibilities further include supervising and co-supervising PhD students, coordinating Master’s research internships, and teaching advanced EEG courses for PhD candidates, with an emphasis on both theoretical understanding and hands-on methodological skills. In addition, I tutor, coordinate, and lecture across Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes at Maastricht University and contribute to outreach activities aimed at engaging broader audiences with neuroscience and research.
