Update 8 May 11:00 hours | Canvas has been taken offline and is unavailable
The hacker group ShinyHunters has posted messages in the Canvas environment at a number of educational institutions stating that they have regained or still have access to the system. As a precautionary measure, UM has disconnected all systems linked to Canvas.
As Canvas has been taken offline, the system cannot currently be used, and this could affect educational activities on 8 May and possibly beyond. We will keep you informed of further developments.
What does this mean for you?
Canvas is currently unavailable. If we find out more, for example, about how long the system cannot be used, we will let you know.
As reported on 6 May, following a hack involving Canvas’s provider, data of UM staff and students, such as email addresses, may also have been leaked. This information could be used in phishing emails.
We therefore ask our staff and students to be extra vigilant about suspicious messages. For example, emails that arrive unexpectedly and/or ask you to share personal details. If in doubt, please contact the ICTS Service Desk.
