Old UM email addresses will be discontinued on 1 August 2026
From 1 August 2026, Maastricht University will discontinue the old email domains @student.unimaas.nl and @alumni.unimaas.nl. This change will help reduce security risks and limit unwanted email and spam. Current email addresses using @student.maastrichtuniversity.nl and @alumni.maastrichtuniversity.nl will remain active.
For many years, Maastricht University has used the @maastrichtuniversity.nl domain and its variants for email communication. Some students and alumni may still have an old email address ending in @student.unimaas.nl or @alumni.unimaas.nl. In many cases, these addresses are linked to the same mailbox as the current UM email addresses.
These old domains pose security risks because the majority of spam messages sent to UM arrive via these email addresses. It has therefore been decided to decommission these old domains as of 1 August 2026.
What is changing?
From 1 August 2026, email addresses ending in @student.unimaas.nl and @alumni.unimaas.nl will no longer work. Current email addresses ending in @student.maastrichtuniversity.nl and @alumni.maastrichtuniversity.nl will continue to function as normal.
Please note: This change applies only to email domains. Login domains such as ‘unimaas’ or ‘unimaas.nl’ are not affected, and domains used for websites will remain unchanged.
What do you need to do?
Check whether your old email address is still being used for newsletters, online accounts or as a password recovery address. If messages are still being sent to an old address, the notification below from the ICTS Service Desk will be added to the email:
"Notification from the ICTS Service Desk
This message has been sent to an old email address. This email address will be discontinued as of Augustus 1, 2026. Please read this information carefully!"
If you see this notification, you can identify the outdated email address by following these steps:
- Open the message in Outlook on the Web (outlook.office.com).
- Right-click the message and select View > View Message Details.
- Search (CTRL+F) for the line beginning with 'To:' in the pop-up window that appears. The address shown is the email address that will be discontinued.
We recommend updating any services that still use the old address and replacing it with your current UM email address as soon as possible.
