Prof Dr Christine Neuhold (C.)

Christine Neuhold is Professor of EU Democratic Governance at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) at Maastricht University (UM). She is political scientist by training with a doctorate from the University of Vienna. At FASoS she has taken on taken on different managerial roles; reaching from Head of the Politics department (2015-2019) to Dean (2020-2026).

Her  research focus is on accountability within networked systems of multi-level governance and the evolving dynamics of EU institutions. Leadership in this domain is evidenced by the co-coordination of two European Union Initial Training networks, involving partnerships across multiple European universities.

Teaching efforts have focused on the transforming EU system of governance and democratic representation at all levels of higher education. This expertise has been shared through the training of civil servants at institutions such as the European Institute for Public Administration, Clingendael, and the European Law Academy in Trier.
She has been an external lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy/Vienna School of International Studies from (2001-2019) and a Visiting Lecturer at the Centre of European Integration Studies, University of Bonn. She was Visiting Fellow at the Institute of European Studies (IES), Berkeley, University of California (2011) and at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute (EUI) (from 1st October 2026 to 1st March 2027). 

Expertises

Christine Neuhold is full Professor of EU Democratic Governance. She is Dean at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University (UM).

Her research focuses on questions of accountability within networked systems of governance. 

She has carried out commissioned work by institutions such as the European Parliament, the Dutch Lower House and national ministries. Her research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Common Market Studies, West European Politics, the Journal of European Public Policy and the Journal of Legislative Studies. She has been a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for European Studies at the University of California (2011), Berkeley and is currently a Visiting Lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy, Vienna and the Centre for European Studies, University of Bonn.

Before joining Maastricht University she held positions at the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) in Maastricht (1997-2000) and at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna (2000-2002).

At Maastricht University she has served as Head of the Department of Political Science (2015-2019) and as Director of the FASoS Graduate School (2015-2017). She was Director of Studies of the Master of European Public Affairs (2004-2007) and of the Bachelor programme European Studies (2007-2010). From September 2011-2013 she directed the Research Master European Studies. She also was Associate Dean for Internationalisation (2005 – 2007).

She (co-)supervises PhD candidates working on EU integration.
