OpenUP grant for an open bioinformatics curriculum awarded!

Marvin, Egon, Lars and Susan have been awarded an OpenUP grant from the Maastricht University Library for the project "Introduction to Bioinformatics for Biomedical Sciences". OpenUP funds UM educators with 5000 euro per project to turn teaching materials into open educational resources. Twelve projects were selected, two per faculty. The department already teaches introductory bioinformatics distributed across many courses and programs, such as BLAST, cell signaling, biological databases and metabolomics. This project brings these together into one openly licensed curriculum with a shared template and a common GitHub-based eBook. The result will also be registered as an ELIXIR learning path so it can be found and reused beyond Maastricht. The project runs until June 2027.

Since April 2026, Liesbeth Scheepers has been Professor of Obstetrics at Maastricht University, alongside her work as a gynaecologist-perinatologist at MUMC+. Her research focuses on improving personalised care for pregnant women and their babies.

Platelets do far more than stop bleeding — they also play a role in thrombosis and immune responses. Professor Judith Cosemans studies the various roles platelets fulfil, in order to create personalised treatments for patients and to learn more about blood clotting.
