A novel biomimetic artificial intervertebral disc: Preserving natural spinal interactions and functions with an integrated biomimetic design.

Total disc replacements (TDRs) were developed as a better treatment for degenerated intervertebral disc induced back and neck pain, which are two of the top five causes for most years lived with disability worldwide. Although they do preserve mobility between vertebrae, the clinical improvement has been less than expected and failures/complications are still too quick/frequent. We hypothesize that this is because current prostheses are based on articulation whereas the natural disc is a more complex structure that deforms, absorbing and storing energy, working together with other spinal elements.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate that a completely biomimetic artificial disc can be produced, become incorporated into and return proper function to the spine.
