La Grazia: film screening + panel discussion

-

The Law & Popular Culture Research Network is excited to invite you to a special screening of the film La Grazia by Paolo Sorrentino (La Grande Bellezza), followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with Nicole Kornet, Ann-Sophie Haspel and Hester van der Kaaij, moderated by Livia Solaro.

The film follows the final months of the Italian president (Toni Servillo)'s term in office. His brilliant middle-aged lawyer-daughter Dorotea (Anna Ferzetti) has brought legislation for him to sign that challenges his beliefs. As the clock ticks, the President must also decide on two pardon requests that pose hazardous moral challenges.

In a subtle way, La Grazia touches on questions of guilt, responsibility and moral judgement – themes that are central not only to the film, but also to the law itself. These and other aspects of the role of law and justice in film and society will be analysed during the panel discussion and active Q&A with the public. Together, we will explore how film can contribute to our understanding of the law, and how stories such as La Grazia open up new perspectives on the production of legal knowledge.
