Gianclaudio Malgieri (G.)

Gianclaudio Malgieri is a Full Professor of Law, with a Chair in AI, Data Governance and Fundamental Rights at Maastricht University (the Netherlands), where he conducts research at the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity. He serves as the Honorary Director of the Brussels Privacy Hub, as the Managing Editor of Computer Law and Security Review, and is the Project Leader of the VaROS Project (NWA project on Vulnerability and Resilience of Online Societies) from 2026 to 2028. He was the project leader of the RESOCIAL (2024-2026) project funded by the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA-NWO) on Vulnerability and Resilience on Social Media, involving a consortium of 4 Universities and 11 cooperation partners.

He is also an affiliated researcher at the LSTS centre of VUB and at the Augmented Law Institute of the EDHEC Business School (Lille, France), and an External Ethics Expert of the European Commission.

Gianclaudio has authored more than 100 publications, including articles in leading international academic journals, a monograph, “Vulnerability and Data Protection Law” (Oxford University Press, 2023) and a co-edited Commentary on the AI Act (The EU AI Act – A thematic Commentary, Hart, 2026).  His works have been cited by, inter alia, top international newspapers (The New York Times, The Washington Post, Le Monde, Politico, La Tribune, France Culture, ilSole24Ore, la Repubblica, il Corriere della Sera, Euractiv) but also by institutions, e.g. the European Commission and the Council of Europe, the World Economic Forum, the Canadian Government, etc.

Career history

Before joining Maastricht University, Gianclaudio Malgieri was an Associate Professor of Law and Technology at Leiden University (2022-2026) and at EDHEC Business School in Lille (2020-2022).

He was the Co-Director of the Brussels Privacy Hub (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) from 2021 to 2025.

He defended his PhD thesis at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and completed his Master at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa.
