This highly competitive grant, will support Wouter's independent research over the next three years. His Veni project focuses on cancer cachexia and muscle wasting. The research investigates how lung tumors release proteins into the bloodstream that reach skeletal muscle and trigger muscle breakdown, with the aim of identifying the specific tumor-derived factors responsible. Using innovative laboratory models and tracking techniques, Wouter aims to pinpoint which tumor-derived proteins are directly responsible for this process. These insights will help lay the foundation for future treatments aimed at preserving muscle strength and improving quality of life for cancer patients.
