More and more people live in our ever-growing cities, affecting natural resources, the environment, and social equality. This bachelor’s programme is all about understanding and solving these challenges. You will dive into topics like circular economy, AI, and materials science while also learning about how society, history and the economy play a role in all of it.
The best part? You get to choose your own path and even do minors at different locations across Europe. You will team up with international students to tackle real-world challenges, like making cities greener and smarter and using data and tech to find solutions. By the end, you’ll be ready to make a real difference and help shape a more sustainable future!
Your voyage through Europe
- In your first year, you will study at both the Heerlen and Maastricht campuses of UM
- Then, you choose 3 minors from over 20 options offered by 10 universities across Europe.
- For your final semester, you will return to Maastricht University to take electives and work on your bachelor’s thesis.
Heerlen, living lab – living in your lab
In the city of Heerlen, just next to Maastricht, you will explore urban sustainability hands-on. Heerlen becomes your living lab, where you can take on real challenges connected to your studies, drawing inspiration from its unique coal-mining past and experience with energy transition.

We are Young Universities for the Future of Europe
The bachelor’s programme of Urban Sustainability Studies is offered by Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE), a group of European universities. YUFE wants to create a friendly and fair future for students and their communities. They hope to be a great example of a caring and responsible university in Europe.
You can start your bachelor’s in Urban Sustainability Studies at Maastricht University or at one of the other six degree awarding YUFE universities.
