New Open-Access Publications on EU Customs and VAT Law
The Maastricht Centre for Taxation (MCT) is proud to announce the release of two open-access books that offer concise and accessible introductions to EU indirect tax law. Both publications are designed to provide readers with a solid understanding of complex legal systems within the span of a single day.
VAT in a Day
The fourth edition of VAT in a Day, authored by Ad van Doesum and Frank Nellen, introduces readers to the current EU VAT system. The book explains the functioning of the system as well as its key concepts and underlying rationale, with all explanations and examples based on the EU VAT Directive (2006/112/EC) and the VAT Implementing Regulation (282/2011). VAT in a Day can be read as a stand-alone introduction and also serves as a prelude to the more extensive volume Fundamentals of EU VAT Law. Its goal is to enable readers to acquire or refresh a basic understanding of EU VAT law within one day, while stimulating further study of this challenging and dynamic field.

Customs in a Day
The first edition of Customs in a Day, authored by Frank Nellen, Khalid Abdullah and Emma van Doornik, offers an introduction to the EU customs system. The book provides an overview of how the system operates, along with the key concepts and rationales underpinning EU customs law. It is firmly based on the relevant legislative framework, in particular the Union Customs Code (UCC), Regulation (EU) 952/2013. Like its VAT counterpart, Customs in a Day is designed for efficient learning, enabling readers to gain or refresh essential knowledge within a single day, while encouraging continued engagement with EU customs law.
