Rachel and Alan Wyatt STS Scholarship

The Rachel and Alan Wyatt STS Scholarship has been established to support students wishing to pursue a master’s degree in Science and Technology Studies (STS). In memory of her parents, the scholarship has been established by Sally Wyatt, Professor of Digital Cultures in our Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS). Since they supported her own education in many ways, she wants to give young talent facing social and financial challenges the chance to study and to acquire equal chances in society.

Background Sally Wyatt                                                                 

Sally originally studied economics at McGill University, Canada and Sussex University, England. She received her PhD in STS from Maastricht University in 1998. She moved to the Netherlands in 1999 and joined FASoS in 2008. Her research focuses on the development and use of digital technologies in the contemporary world. Within this scholarship, the following two master programs at FASoS are offered to EU/EER students with financial need:

1-year master program ESST, European Studies on Society, Science and Technology

2-year master program CAST, Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology.

Who is eligible?

All candidates must meet the following requirements

You must have submitted a complete application by 1 May 2025 to:

  • a full-time master’s programme in European studies on Society, Science and Technology;
  • a full-time master’s programme in Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology

at Maastricht University for the 2025-2026 academic year. You meet the specific admission requirements of the UM master programme to which you have applied.

  • You hold nationality in a country in the EU/EER
  • You are a student with financial need.

This scholarship provides an opportunity to experience the Problem-Based Learning educational model at Maastricht University, but also gives the scholarship recipient the opportunity to learn from other cultures by becoming a part of Maastricht University’s international academic community.

The deadline is up to and including 1 May 2025 23:59 CET. 

Duration of the Rachel and Alan Wyatt STS Scholarship Programme

12 months for the master programme:

  • European studies on Society, Science and Technoly or Cultures of Arts

24 months for the Master Programme:

  • Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology (research)

Amount of the scholarship

The scholarship covers the tuition fee at cost and a living allowance for the duration of the scholarship as stated in the scholarship award letter. The period of the scholarship starts and ends at the dates mentioned in the awarding letter.

Application procedure

Step 1: Apply for admissions to the master’s programme at Maastricht University via Studielink. Candidates must have submitted a complete application for the relevant study programmes via Studielink and My UM for September 2025 by 1 May 2025. 

Step 2: Application to the scholarship:

Upload the following documents in .doc, .docx, or PDF format in English, and submit your application. Please note that you will only be able to submit your application once, so please ensure that all of your documents are up-to-date.

  • Curriculum Vitae. Your CV should be up-to-date, contain relevant information about your education and (job) experience, and should not be longer 2 A4 pages.
  • Letter of motivation. Your letter of motivation should be up-to-date and specifically tailored to this scholarship programme. Generic letters of admission that do not directly address your motivation for the Rachel and Alan Wyatt STS scholarship selection will be rejected. Your letter of motivation should be no longer than 1 A4 page. Be sure to argue why this scholarship is important to you, why you should be selected.
  • A letter of reference from an educational institution or an employer in your home country.
  • A statement of financial need;

Selection procedure

Step 1: The faculty will review and rank the application requests. The faculty and Rachel and Alan Wyatt STS Scholarship will make the final decision.
Step 2: Applicants will be informed about the selection outcome at the end of July 2025.
Step 3: The candidates who are awarded the scholarship will receive an award letter; they must sign and return this letter to the UM International Services Desk to accept the scholarship.

For the scholarship assessment, the Scholarship Committee takes all elements of the application into account, including motivation and the reference.
