Sensemaking Workshop
Marine Environmental Policy and Compliance: Regulatory Challenges and Potential Role of AI-Driven Solutions
This sensemaking workshop is the first stage of the 'AI & Marine Environmental Policy: What Role for Automated Systems' project, led by Dr Henrique Marcos and Dr Rohan Nanda and funded by the Netherlands Empirical Legal Studies (ELS) Academy.
The workshop discusses marine environmental policy, anthropogenic pollution, and biodiversity loss. It brings together domain experts who can provide insights into the various challenges surrounding legal compliance in these areas. Gathering their expertise, the workshop will investigate potential AI-driven solutions, such as the creation of semi-automated compliance checking systems.
The event will be organised into thematic panels, each with brief presentations (5-10 minutes) from selected participants. These concise overviews will highlight key issues, practical experiences, research gaps, and provide context for further discussion. Then, all attendees will take part in roundtable discussions. This format is intended to foster an interactive and collaborative environment. This would enable participants to identify practical strategies for closing compliance gaps through collective sensemaking, laying the groundwork for the development of AI-based tools to improve legal compliance in marine environmental protection, pollution mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.
This workshop is supported by funding from the ELS Academy and the WetenschapsCommissie, Maastricht University Faculty of Law.
