106 Days: Sara Mardini, the Imprisoned Humanitarian
In the summer of 2015, Sara and her sister Yusra fled the Syrian civil war to seek asylum in Europe. The perilous journey of Sara and Yusra made international headlines as they pulled a sinking boat of refugees to safety on the Greek island of Lesbos. After their heroic act, Sara and her sister settled in Berlin, Germany and used their new spotlight to bring awareness to the refugee crisis. In parallel to studying at Bard College Berlin, Sara volunteered as a spotter and rescuer for the Greek Emergency Response Centre International (ERCI), which provides emergency response and humanitarian aid to refugees in high risk situations.
On the 21st of August 2018, while waiting for her flight back to Berlin, Sara was arrested for illegally aiding migrants. She spent 106 days in pre-trial detention in a maximum-security prison before eventually being released on bail in December 2018. Through all her trials and tribulations, Sara remains committed to the cause of refugees and continues her work as a humanitarian and an activist throughout Europe. So join us on 26 April to witness the extraordinary story of Sara Mardini.
