Herke Kranenborg (H.R.)

 

Herke Kranenborg is professor in European Data Protection and Privacy Law at Maastricht University. He is also a member of the Legal Service of the European Commission working in the area of privacy and data protection. In addition to advising the Commission and its departments in these areas, he regularly represents the Commission in litigation before the EU Courts in Luxembourg.

 

From 2008 to 2013 he worked for the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) in Brussels and between 2001 to 2008 he worked at the Europa Institute of the University of Leiden. He wrote a PhD on how to reconcile the EU fundamental rights to privacy and data protection with the EU fundamental right of public access to documents. Since 2010, Herke Kranenborg is also affiliated to the Institute for European Law of the KU Leuven as senior researcher.

 

Herke Kranenborg teaches European data protection and privacy Law in master courses of the Maastricht Centre for European Law (MCEL) and the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC).

 

His research focusses on the development of the right to data protection and the right to privacy in the European Union, the implications of this development for the EU legal order and the interaction of the two rights with other fundamental rights, such as the right to freedom of expression.

 

Herke Kranenborg contributed widely to books and academic journals (in English and Dutch) on data protection, privacy and fundamental rights in general. Together with Luc Verhey, he wrote a Dutch monograph on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): De Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming in Europees en Nederlands perspectief (Kluwer 2018) and with Gerrit-Jan Zwenne he is co-editor of the Tekst & Commentaar Privacy- en gegevensbeschermingswetgeving (Kluwer 2021). In 2020 and 2021 he acted as Institutional Rapporteur on the topic of data protection for the FIDE2020 conference in The Hague.
