- science_and_engineering_-_modelling_the_present_to_understand_the_future_of_tropical_rainforests.pdf (203.36 kB, PDF)… Lecturer Evolutionary Biology Collaborators: Prof. Dr. T.J. Cleij (Maastricht Science Programme) Proposal (250 words): Introduction: Tropical rain forests hold most of the plant diversity on earth but biologists have no proper explanation for this. Modelling the climatic niches of species can contribute substantially to our understanding of the composition of such forests. Large, widespread and well-studied plant groups can serve as a model system for such research. Annonaceae is a pantropical plant family that contributes significantly … there differences in ecology between evolutionary groups within Annonaceae, and 3) do different rainforest have different ecological characteristics? Setting and Methods: SDM will be used to estimate climatic niches of all 2450 species in Annonaceae. This modelling data will then be combined with real biological data from paleontological sources and from plot inventories on several continents. All data will be interpreted in an evolutionary framework. Impact: The understanding of climatic niches …
- computer_science_-_real-time_monte-carlo_search_for_physics-based_simulation_games_applications_to_space_advanced_manufacturing_and_transport.pdf (207.16 kB, PDF)… Pool have become increasingly popular in recent years. In these games, physics simulators have complete information about and control over all the physical properties of all objects in the game world. As such, each move and its consequences can be exactly simulated and displayed, which makes the physical behaviour of the game appear quite realistic. The challenge for an agent in these games is how to handle the large number of possible moves in real-time. Recently, a reasoning technique called Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), has led to increased level of play in a wide range of abstract games (such as Go). Hypothesis and Objectives: The aim of the proposal is to develop effective methods within this MCTS framework for PBSGs. The two research questions are: 1: “How to develop abstraction methods such that MCTS can efficiently explore a continuous state-action space?” 2: “How to develop methods such that MCTS can perform effectively in real-time?” Setting and Methods: Agents have to be developed that are able to compete in PBSGs where there is an active …

- fpn-cc-m-mh-cap-2023-nl.pdf (82.37 kB, PDF)… Final paper Keywords: Klinische stage, volwassen- en kind & jeugdzorg, intake, diagnostiek, behandeling/begeleiding Thesis Research Internship & Master’s Thesis Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience Academic Skills Full course description In this course, the research proposal is drafted in preparation for the research internship. The course serves to provide students with general skills and a source of information about academic research. The course thereby supports the development of the research proposal and subsequent execution of the internship via assignments, workshops, and lectures that allow students to practice and develop their academic skills. The research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it is important, and how you will do the research. The format of a research proposal varies between … students are able to execute a literature review; students are able to use a reference manager; students are able to select a research design and corresponding methods for a research project; students understand basic statistical techniques; students can explain characteristics of academic writing and are able to implement and apply that knowledge to the writing of a research proposal. (this list is just an example, and will be updated each year, based on student and supervisor needs) PSY4775 Year …

- fpn_csc_bettina_sorger.pdf (381.35 kB, PDF)… of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering, Maastricht University) Proposal (250 words): Introduction: Severe motor paralysis is a rare but terrifying condition dramatically hampering the quality of life of affected patients. In extreme cases, patients can only rely on so-called brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), systems in which the patient’s brain signals are used to control and interact with the environment. In such systems, brain signals are acquired by means of functional neuroimaging methods. BCI research has made promising progress over the past years. However, much room for improvement and extension is left. Hypothesis and Objectives: Substantial progress in the field of brain-computer interfacing can be made by creatively combining advanced neuro- and computer-science methods. As an example, the proposed PhD research will design, develop and experimentally test novel BCI-based gaming applications to provide entertainment possibilities for the … the last 15 years), as measured with fMRI and fNIRS, and employing mental imagery and selective attention to generate distinct brain signals. Single- and dual-player BCI-based interactive gaming applications will be developed, the latter making hyperscanning (i.e., simultaneous measuring two individuals) necessary. To realize flexible and attractive BCI-based gaming applications, we will implement suitable computer algorithms as well as virtual and augmented reality. Impact: The newly developed BCI …
- biobased_materials_-_novel_high_performance_but_recyclable_polycondensates_from_itaconic_acid.pdf (321.05 kB, PDF)… polymers Introduction: Polymer materials find use in an immense number of applications in our daily life. One problem with the usage of plastics is that they are generally not biodegradable and might accumulate in nature if not disposed correctly. In this project, we address the challenges in recyclability, specifically for high performance polycondensates. Through the application of a renewable monomer, itaconic acid, we will develop high melting and high molecular weight polyesters and polyamides … will be paid to address recyclable aspects of these polymers with focus on reducing CO2 footprint. Hypothesis and Objectives: Itaconic acid, a rather versatile biobased monomer, having 2 carboxylic acid functionalities and one unsaturated bond can be useful for various applications; having potential to be used as a building block in polyesters, providing cross-linking site in thermosets, and functionalities to surfactants. In our ongoing research we make use of itaconic acid as a component … these materials introduction of crystalline components is required. The preliminary findings of ours indicate that the itaconic monomers are also suitable for the development of high performance monomers having melting temperatures up to 300 °C. For this reason, in this project we particularly focus on the development of semi-crystalline polymers that allow (bio)degradation and recycling. To be more specific, these materials should be depolymerizable under mild conditions, for example using …
