InScience - Food Evolution
InScience International Science Film Festival Nijmegen, is one of the largest science film festivals in Europe. It’s fifth edition takes place from 6 to 10 November in Nijmegen. Last year, we had a blast hosting the first satellite event. This year, we are focusing on GMO of food, the CRISPR technique and scientists challenging Einstein’s theory of gravity.
In close collaboration with Lumière Cinema, we are curating three thought-provoking and beautiful films from this year’s festival selection. Staff members of Maastricht University will introduce the films, and afterwards give a brief response to them and answer your questions.
Food Evolution
Filmmaker Scott Kennedy and narrator and celebrity physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, take on the seemingly intractable and polarising debate surrounding the use of genetically modified foods. Travelling from Hawaiian papaya groves, via banana farms in Uganda to the cornfields of Iowa, Kennedy reveals the emotional politics and heated scientific arguments that are driving both sides of the debate. FOOD EVOLUTION brings a fresh, surprisingly entertaining and provocative perspective to one of the most critical issues facing global society today.
Guest speaker
Prof. Peter Peters is Professor of Nanobiology at Maastricht University. He works on genetic modification of bacteria that cause disease and studies the 3D structure of gene products. His Maastricht Multimodal Molecular Imaging institute (M4I) is fully equipped to work with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). In his talk, he will explain how the CRISPR technology can help us create crops that are resistant to diseases.
In cooperation with Lumière Cinema.
