The unexpected visitors are Jane Jacob, the intrepid urbanist and acti- vist from US, and Hannah Arendt the philosopher who fled Germany and Fascism in 1933. The former argues for a community based approach to city living and building neighbourhoods in which all … city where no income means no rent and eventually no food. The abrupt shutdown without guarantees was what sent workers onto the roads. There were some women and children too who had been pulled out of schools for what they were told would be a brief visit to the village, much like a holiday. At the start of the journey the children were dressed in shiny new clothes, their hair slickly oiled and braided with shiny clips. These were children protected by their parents. Later, as this exodus went on … where the number of middle class workers became fewer and where the out of work workers lived, one could see human dignity getting degraded step by step. If one appeared on a silent road, burkha clad women would emerge, walk tentatively up to the visitor, and ask for help. The number of women in search of sustenance was grow- ing; many were widows, while others emerged with their faces covered to collect food as some men found it humiliating to stand in food lines. It was a surreal and moving …

In contrast to validation, which is usually carried out once before project implementation, verification is carried out regularly after project implementation (Verra, n.d.). The verification process includes document review, interviews, project visits and assessment of monitoring techniques by a VVB. This lends credibility to the carbon offsets (Kökey, 2024). Furthermore, validation examines the project design, whereas verification assesses the actual performance of the project (Verra, … and spillovers: Informing land-use governance in a tele-coupled world. - MA Thesis - Jorge Lozano 2025.pdf (700.3 kB, PDF)… systemic issues of inequality and exclusion (Bull, 2019, p. 6). In search of some inspiration on how to move forward, I want to take a moment, however unorthodox, to leave the conservatory for a moment and step into the museum for the briefest of visits. The discourses of crisis and systemic issues that I have discussed here are not exclusive to classical music, nor unparalleled in fields like museology (Smith & Peters, 2024, p. 2). Just like classical music organisations, museums struggle with … music practices, the steps museums have taken towards fundamental change in their practices and the discussions and struggles around them are of the most up-to-date relevance for classical music. As Wayne Modest puts it in the foreword of The Critical Visitor: Changing Heritage Practices (Steinbock & Dibbits, 2022a), practitioners and scholars who are aware of these struggles in museums share a sense of exhaustion, as in “the act of using something up, or the state of being used up” (Modest, 2022, … practitioners, the art form they practice, or even the institution itself, are the concepts at their basis, their intellectual foundation, and in particular, the idea of autonomy. In this line, I want to take a closer look at the concept of critical visitor that museum scholars like Modest have identified as a new kind of museum constituency (2022, p. 7). Not only is she a visitor who expects and demands for culture to be presented in inclusive ways and for diverse abilities and backgrounds, but …
