For instance, a right-hemisphere parietal stroke can cause hemi-neglect. Neglect patients are no longer able to attend to the left visual field, causing small practical problems, such as failing to notice food on the … Hypothesis/Objectives: In this project, we create such a patient model using healthy volunteers. We use brain stimulation to induce a ‘virtual lesion’. Creating ‘virtual patients’ in this way will allow us to test and compare different treatments with a wide range of brain stimulation treatments. Setting/Methods: TMS will be used to disrupt right parietal cortex, creating a ‘virtual neglect patient’. Then, in an innovative new approach, we will use electrical (transcranial alternating current; … neurological and neuro-psychiatric disorders, including but not limited to neglect syndrome. To create a patient model, and then use it to test treatments, would accelerate clinical research enormously. Requirements candidate: Highly motivated student with good English communication skills and proactive and resolute attitude. Keywords: stroke, brain stimulation, neuromodulation, life science, mental health, technological innovation Top 5 relevant selected publications (of proposed research team, …
- biobased_materials_-_development_of_a_novel_multi-functional_smart_wound_dressing.pdf (205.33 kB, PDF)… Engineering & Evaluation) Proposal (250 words): Introduction: The wound healing process occurs in highly ordered phases of (1) haemostasis and coagulation, (2) inflammation, (3) proliferation and (4) maturation. A multi-functional dressing that can cover all these healing phases without a need for daily changes holds considerable promises. However, in order to use such dressings, the healing dynamics of wound should be regularly monitored to avoid critical challenges such as infection. The pH of wound fluid has been indicated as an important diagnostic factor of wound condition. Therefore, a multi-functional wound dressing equipped with smart materials, pH monitoring and communication technologies can significantly improve the clinical outcomes. Hypothesis and Objectives: A smart wound dressing consisting of healing materials and monitoring system can provide a) an objective …
- um_gced_posters_a1-pages-7-ebc2056.pdf (545.97 kB, PDF)… Ethical dilemma EBC2056: International Financial Accounting Students test the boundaries of ethical financial reporting, facing two scenarios in which specific reporting choices can serve personal purposes of a manager, rather than that of society. Students will need to apply the account- ing knowledge gained during the course and evaluate which reporting choice best reflects reality. No right or wrong outcome exists, but the … be inherently right or wrong, but rather trigger different ethical considerations. As an infinite number of solutions exist and the truth likely is in the middle, teachers should at the end of the assignment show the most extreme options and discuss with the students why these may be wrong. Student preparation None. Flow Students are given the scenario/assignment prior to the tutorial group meeting, as it centralizes the learning materials of the full course. On the basis of their preparation, the group of students should work towards a common answer. The role of the tu- tor is to stimulate discussion and challenge assumptions and the choices students make. Students will need to be able to validate every reporting decision, and why they feel it best re- presents the underlying reality of the firm. Students can contribute anything that can help the group reach a conclusion. Assessment There is no formal assessment of the discussion and assignment, other than via the participation …

- international_maricap_conference_2016_call_for_proposals.pdf (209.47 kB, PDF)… Commune Research School Conference Faculty of Law, Maastricht University The Netherlands People marry in different ways: either civilly or religiously, or both. Dissolving a civil marriage is usually not too difficult; dissolving a religious marriage can, however, be quite a challenge, especially for women of migrant or refugee background. A civil divorce pronounced by a civil court will generally not end a religious marriage. Whether a person is ‘still’ religiously married or not, is often … his or her religious marriage, i.e. keeping a spouse 'trapped' in a marriage against his or her will. A situation of marital captivity can have serious implications for the trapped spouse, usually the woman, such as the inability to re-marry or travel without restrictions. In the research project ‘Marital Captivity: bridging the gap between religion and law’, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), researchers of the Law Faculty of Maastricht University investigate this phenomenon within the Dutch context. The research project aims (i) to gain insight into the phenomenon of marital captivity in the Netherlands, and (ii) to find legal solutions (national and international) to resolve and prevent situations of marital captivity …
