- Interviewtext Stefan Vrancken - © Sanne Tummers.docx (12.55 kB, DOCX)… essential contribution to the face of Maastricht. It’s located in many historic buildings around the city, and takes responsibility for their conservation and maintenance. That’s not nothing. Who else would do that? It’s not something the municipality can afford. And it means a wealth of historical and cultural heritage is preserved; you can find something beautiful on almost every street corner. For someone like me, with a passion for history, this is something to be very happy about. It keeps history alive. “I can indulge myself here. In fact, I think the stories behind all that heritage should be told and shared much more. Just think of all that’s already happened in the very place where … to hold a conference. Charm “Some people find the students an inconvenience; I get that. In my street in Wyck, I trip over bikes now and then. And I have to get used to the fact that the official language is no longer always Dutch—or Mestreechs —in shops and restaurants. It’s important to enter into dialogue about that and continue to seek a good balance. But as far as I’m concerned, it also has its charm. It makes the city lively and vibrant. And hearing all those different languages makes me …
- Albert Faber _MORSE conf contribution_The economics of strategic choices in climate adaptation.pdf (439.27 kB, PDF)… choices are made on short-term economic considerations. For example, policy makers may choose to build houses in high risk flooding areas, citizens may choose to turn up air conditioning, or farmers may choose to irrigate more intensely. Such choices can have strong cascading effects for the future, e.g. by increasing emissions or by reinforcing drought. These cascading effects are thus not (sufficiently) taken into consideration. Strategic thinking about climate adaptation takes better account of future consequences. Strategic climate adaptation policy may be considered in terms of the exploration of a ‘solution space’ of (possible) choices in time. Solution space can be understood in terms of a range of biophysical, techno-economic, socio-cultural and political-institutional factors. The solution space for strategic choices is contingent of choices in the past and may thus shift over time. Any choice thus … solution space (e.g. in terms of option values) and lock in-effects (e.g. in terms of structural transition costs). We aim to include such considerations in a policy advice on long term strategic policy choices for climate adaptation. Some first ideas can be discussed. 1 Netherlands Scientific Climate Council (WKR), The Hague, Netherlands. Albert.faber@wkr.nl. 2 Haasnoot, M., Biesbroek, R., Lawrence, J. et al.
